Why I became a qualified executive coach to elevate my IT leadership and delivery skills

🍸 I’ve been getting out and about a bit more recently. I’ve slowly been honing my response to the question, “and what do you do”? The immediate response is “I’m a fractional IT architect and a qualified executive coach”. People step backwards. And then I explain why …

🤔 Very early in my career I realized something: technical skills alone aren’t enough to navigate the ever-increasing complexity of today’s IT landscape. The ability to lead with emotional intelligence – to understand and manage emotions, foster collaboration, and create strong, resilient teams – is just as important as technical expertise.

👫 IT projects aren’t just about the technology; they’re about people. Whether it’s leading a cloud migration, architecting custom software, or implementing Agile methodologies, success depends on the team’s ability to work together under pressure, adapt to changing demands, and stay motivated – even when the going gets tough.

☸️ Architecture roles are most certainly about people! Architects bring people from all disciplines together; they create and maintain a collaborative space. Architects guide everyone, and translate between domains to establish a shared understanding and direction. I always visualise an architect as the hub in a wheel.

🧠 Executive coaching builds emotional intelligence by fostering self-awareness, empathy, and effective communication. Individuals gain a deeper understanding of their emotions, triggers, and thought patterns, enabling them to manage stress and respond thoughtfully in challenging situations. Coaching encourages active listening and perspective-taking, which enhances empathy and strengthens interpersonal relationships. As a result, leaders become more attuned to their own emotions and those of others, fostering collaboration, trust, and resilience within teams, which is essential for navigating complex professional environments.

📈 My journey into executive coaching has transformed the way I approach IT leadership and delivery. Now, when I take on complex projects, I don’t just focus on delivering technical solutions, I focus on creating teams that are motivated, resilient, and ready to tackle any challenge that comes their way.

💪 For me, being a qualified Executive Coach is about merging emotional intelligence with technical expertise to build stronger teams and deliver better results.
